The Maricopa Youth Recreation Center operated by Maricopa Ak-Chin CAASA is a community-based partnership whose goals are to provide students with current information and education about substance abuse, life skills building, and bullying prevention to increase peer leadership, community involvement, and personal success.
The center provides the following programs and services:
Youth Recreation Center
Students socialize in a safe and supervised atmosphere that includes a game room, snack bar, and a variety of activities like ping pong, board games, billiard tournaments and team wall ball. Coordinators organize games like sumo wrestling, Twister play-offs, and concerts.
Peer Leadership
SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) is a club to help students make positive choices about challenges they will face in their lives. Middle school and high school members meet weekly and are provided the best intervention and prevention tools to deal with issues about underage drinking, drug use, impaired driving, and other destructive behaviors.
Art/Music Program
Over the summer there will be four drama classes for members including a middle school an high school improv class, and a middle school and high school one act production.
Learn to play string instruments, and guitar, read music while having fun and learning at your own pace as well as opportunities to play with an ensemble. Instruments are made available for youth.
Teen Recreation Center Internships (Ages13-18)
Six teen internship positions are offered. Interested youth must complete application and interview with a panel of center staff. Teens chosen will assist front desk operations, manage the Snack Bar, supervise the game room, and participate in programming and activities planning. A stipend is provided.
Adult Volunteerism
Community members are provided opportunities to volunteer and use their skills as chaperons, fundraisers, clerical work, and weekly set-up/break-down of the center.
Drama/Film Club
In this club, members will learn how to write scripts, produce one-scene shows, filming, editing and so much more.
Photography Club
Youth will learn how to take pictures and operate a camera. Members also learn about lighting, spacing, and backgrounds. They will get experience by taking pictures at our numerous events at the center.
Fitness Club
Get a great workout through cardio and aerobic exercise. Youth will learn how to exercise correctly and take care of their bodies through movement.
We are always looking for volunteers.
